The Hobbit Yurt
It is twelve years since i made my first yurt. I was working in architecture at the time, and my daughter was a year old. Camping holidays were norm for us as kids and I wanted to share that with Ella. However my partner Ann being a city girl was not so keen. I did a bit of research and discovered yurts and so began a wonderful journey.
With the help of Paul Kings The Complete Yurt Handbook I set about building my first yurt. Now known as the Hobbit Yurt it is still going strong. It has sheltered us and others. It has been a holiday home, spare room, sauna, playhouse. It has kept us warm and dry in some challeging weather and i love it every bit as much today as when i built it.
Some years later a friend John Bowker called me. He said we are setting up this camp Nick and we need a 20ft yurt and your a yurt maker. I said well John ive only made one yurt and it was only very small, and he said yeah but your a yurt maker nick and we need a yurt maker. In the end i agreed to do it and in the process learned a lot about yurts and maybe a little bit about myself. From that and my association with Tribal Spirit and Earthsong camps a hobby has developed into a business.
